Astrid "Omi" "Oma" Wegner

Astrid G. Wegner, known as “Omi” “Oma”, age 75, of Merrill, WI, passed away on Saturday, October 24, 2020 at Wellington Place of Whiting in Stevens Point, while under the care of Ascension Hospice.  She was born on January 6, 1945 to the late Wilhelm and Berta (Fuchs) Herrmannsdoerfer in Aub, Germany.  Astrid grew up in Nueremburg, Germany, where she attended and finished her schooling.  She met her soon-to-be husband, Franklin, while he was enlisted in the U.S. military, stationed in Germany.  Astrid exchanged marriage vows with Franklin Wegner on June 14, 1962 in Germany.  Sadly, Franklin preceded her in death on February 9, 2006.

Astrid was a stay at home mom and did all the farming, as well as babysitting the neighborhood children. Her strong work ethic was instilled upon everyone in her care.  Astrid enjoyed listening to Elvis Presley, going to polka events, traveling with family, and enjoying good food at the casinos, as well as being part of the bowling league for church.  Her favorite activity to do was watching sports, any and all sporting events, including all of the summer and winter Olympics, Packers games and Badgers games.  She also enjoyed watching soccer games.  Astrid attended all the sporting events and activities of not only her own grandchildren, but of all the children in her care.  She was a long-time member at the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church (WELS) in the town of Berlin.  Astrid was a loving woman that will be sadly missed by many.

Astrid leaves behind her loving children: Marion (Wayne) Lammert, Brenda (Jim) Jahnke, Susan (Louis) Banualos, Robbin (Steve) Ranta and Robert (Mary) Wegner- extended family, grandchildren: Danielle (Tim) Collatz-family, Christopher (LindsayKate) Lammert, Jennifer Ranta, Sarah Ranta, Kyle Jahnke-family, Brandon Banualos-family, Tricia Wegner, Stacy (Cole) Lopez-family. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband: Franklin Wegner, son: David Wegner, sister: Alma Briettenstein and grandson: Michael Lammert.

The funeral service for Astrid will be held on Sunday, November 1, 2020 at 1pm at the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church (WELS) in the town of Berlin.  Rev. Andrew DeGier will officiate.  Visitation will be held on Sunday, November 1, 2020 from 11:30 am until the time of the service, also at the church.  Burial will immediately follow the service and will take place in the church cemetery.

A recording of the service will be posted under her obituary on our website within 2 days of the service.

The family of Astrid wishes to extend their thanks and appreciation to the Wellington Place of Whiting and Ascension Hospice for their care and compassion shown to Astrid and the her family, to Pastor Andrew DeGier for calling and visiting, to Jennifer Ranta for her loving care and attention, and to everyone that sent cards, letters, etc. to Astrid, it meant the world to her and it was the highlight of her day.  If you wish, a donation may be given in Astrid’s name to your favorite charity or organization.
