Roy Eckes

June 9, 1927 — July 6, 2018

Roy Joseph Eckes, age 91, formerly of Merrill passed away Friday July 6, 2018 at Four Winds Nursing Home in Verona, WI under the care of Heartland Hospice.  Roy was born June 9, 1927 to the late Joseph and Anna(Gleisner) Eckes in Marshfield, Wi.

He graduated from Marshfield High School in 1945 and entered the United States Army Air Force where he served from 1945-1947. After honorable discharge he began working for Waukeegan Air Service in Waukegan, IL.  He returned to Marshfield in 1948 and began working for Sears and Roebucks in the Repair and Service Department.  Duty called again as he served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War from 1950 until 1953. He then resumed his career with Sears and Roebucks. Roy made the decision to further his education at Stout State College graduating in 1957. He then began his teaching career at the Merrill High School as an Industrial Arts teacher and continued that role at both the Senior and Junior Highs up until his retirement in 1989. Summers were spent working for the school district, building furniture and bookcases for schools throughout the district.

He married the love of his life, Elizabeth Ann Utter,  in 1957 who preceded him in death in 2005.  Together they raised two sons, Tom and Curt Eckes.

Roy enjoyed golfing, bowling, building airplane models, woodworking, and music. He loved to sing and could play almost any instrument put in front of him. He entertained many with his accordion and piano playing, all by ear.

Roy is survived by sons; Tom(Patricia) Eckes of Stevens Point and Curt(Linda) Eckes of Sun Prairie. Six grandchildren; Chad Eckes of Naperville, IL, Kevin(Tiffany)Eckes of Chandler, AZ, Jackie(Dan)Rosek of Crystal Falls, MI, Maddy Eckes(Michael Sandstrom) of Stevens Point, WI, Katie(John)Erickson of Atlanta, GA, and Christopher Eckes of Stoughton, WI. Roy is also survived by ten great grandchildren; Peyton Eckes, Terra Rosek, Abby Rosek, Michael Rosek, Jonathon Rosek, Ashston Sandstrom, Tanner Sandstrom, Grace Erickson, Isabel Eckes, and Jordan Eckes.

Roy is further survived by sister Lynette Drefahl of Jacksonville, FL, brother Harry(Laura)Eckes of Flowermound, TX, sister in law Midge Berg of Marshfield, and numerous neices and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Elizabeth Ann,  two infant brothers, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Private services will be held gravesite at Merrill Memorial Park at a later date. Military honors will be performed at that time.

The family would like to thank the staff at Four Winds Nursing Home and Heartland Hospice for their assistance and great care over the years.
