Kevin Monroe, age 55, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, January 13, 2016 at his residence in Merrill. Kevin was born on January 19, 1960 to James "Jim" Monroe and the late Barbara (Hunter) Monroe in Lakewood, California. He attended school at Fallbrook Union High School. Kevin went on to further his education and graduated from the Stratford Career Institute in 2007 with a degree in security/police science. Kevin enlisted in the U.S. Army and was proud to serve his country from 1/28/1977 – 1/27/1980. He received certificates for completing Armor School and the Airborne Course, as he went on to proudly jump out of airplanes to help fight forest fires. Kevin worked at Lincoln Wood in Merrill for over 15 years, before taking a position as a line worker at Northern Wire in July 2015. In his younger years, he worked for SODAK Gaming, where he would install slot machines in casinos. Kevin would go all around the state playing on as many golf courses as he could. Kevin was very interested in history, especially having to do with the wars and any sort of army paraphernalia. He would also enjoy an old western movie every once and awhile. Kevin enjoyed collecting and studying guns, he was very knowledgeable about them. He loved the outdoors, whether he was backpacking in the wilderness, enjoying friends and family around a bonfire or hosting barbeques as the "Grill Sergeant", while enjoying a cold beer. When the weather was not so nice, you could find Kevin indoors crafting something from wood while listening to his favorite music, classic rock (especially Jimmy Buffet), or watching his Oakland Raiders play football. He would enjoy listening to politics, but had a love/hate for them at the same time! Kevin was a devoted family man – he was an amazing father and grandfather. He was young at heart and his family meant the world to him. Kevin was a very passionate man that always taught his children to tell the truth and to respect and care for others. He was very accepting, especially when it came to family – he treated his "new" family as if they were always his, protecting and loving them with all of his heart. He will be sadly missed. Kevin is survived by his father: Jim ( 2nd mother, Bea) Monroe from California, "the mother of his children": Amy Monroe of Merrill, his daughters: McKenzie Monroe (Tyler Bricko) of Merrill and Katy White (fiancé, Chris Burger) from Wausau, son: Tyler Monroe, grandchildren: Andrew and Madilynn, brothers: Doug Monroe and John Robbins, sister: Stacey Johnson from California, step-sister: Deb (Greg) Hurd from Canada, step-brother: James Beck from California and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother: Barbara Robbins. A memorial service for Kevin will be held on Friday, January 22, 2016 at 3pm at Waid Funeral Home in Merrill. Pastor Carolyn Saunders will officiate. Visitation will be held on Friday, January 22, 2016 at 1pm and continue until the time of the service, also at the funeral home. Military honors will be performed by VFW Post # 1638 of Merrill immediately after the service at the funeral home. Waid Funeral Home of Merrill is assisting the family with arrangements.
