Richard Ellis

Richard A. Ellis, 79, of Merrill, passed away Wednesday, December 2, 2009, at Kennedy Park in Wausau.


Richard was born August 2, 1930 in Estella, Wisconsin, to the late John and Mildred (Smith) Ellis Sr. He married Mary Ann Hilken in Waukon, Iowa on January 30, 1954. Richard served in the Army as the last of the Mounted Calvary and as a mule and horse trainer. He retired from Marathon Electric where he worked for many years. Richard enjoyed hunting, fishing, ice skating, gardening, horsemanship and was an avid reader, Westerns being his favorite. Richard was a member of St. Stephen’s United Church of Christ.


Survivors include his wife, Mary Ann, his eight children, Gary (Sally) Ellis, ElReno, OK, Roxanne (Thomas) Writz, Rib Mountain, Dick (Sandra) Ellis Jr., Weston, Bert (Kathryn) Ellis, Merrill, Jeffrey (Teressa) Ellis, Irma, Jayson (Vicki) Ellis, Irma, Clay (Cheryl) Ellis, Irma, and Tracy (Martha) Ellis, 15 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, 2 brothers; John Jr.(Virginia), Charlie (Dode), 4 sisters; Dorothy (Leonard) Bieghley, Jane (Bud) Hurlburt, Pat (Marshall) Ruegger, Nancy (Wayne) Hyland, and many nieces and nephews.


He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Harold Smith and William Ellis, and sister Helen Ellis, 3 grandchildren, Jeremy Ellis, Micayla Ellis, and Joshua Ellis, and 1 great granddaughter Hailey.


A Memorial Service will be Saturday, December 5, 2009, at 3:00 PM at St Stephen’s United Church of Christ. The Rev. Rowell Puedevan will officiate. Memorials may be made to the family to donate Western books to T.B. Scott Library. Waid Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements. Online condolences may be made at www.waidfuneral.com .
