Lylas Berndt

Lylas F. Berndt, 89, Merrill, passed away Tuesday, April 6, 2010 at the home of his daughter and son-in-law.


Lylas was born on August 26, 1920 to the late Emil and Esther (Henrichs) Berndt in Merrill. He married Bernice Sabatke December 1, 1945 at St. Stephen’s UCC in Merrill. She preceded him in death on October 1, 2000.


Lylas worked at Semco as a billing clerk for over 40 years. In his younger years, he worked as a logger and helped his father on the family farm. He also worked for Fromm Brothers in Hamburg. Lylas served in the U.S. Army during WWII and fought in the European Theatre, Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge. He was a member of the VFW Post 1638 for 60 years. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, dartball, dancing, woodworking, playing the accordion, Sunday drives, and building things for his family. He especially enjoyed spending time at his cottage with his family. He was very involved in many aspects with St. Stephen’s Church where he was a lifetime member.


Survivors include his 2 children: Sharon (Dennis) Woller, Merrill, and Daryl (Donna) Berndt, Rothschild; 5 grandchildren: Gregory (Chrystal) Woller, Iowa, Chadwick (Jill) Woller, Wisconsin Rapids, Kristi (Steven) Adams, Ringle, Adam Berndt, Rothschild, and Cara (Amani) Lotegeluaki, Milwaukee; 9 great-grandchildren: Madison & Benjamin Woller, Hannah, Samantha & Landon Mezei, Isabel Adams, Tyler Berndt, Ayla & Jonah Lotegeluaki; 1 brother: Carlos (Dorothy) Berndt; 1 sister: Miriam (Elgart) Salefske; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Adeline Berndt, Phyllis Schlueter, Mary Ann (Don) Forster, Shirley Sabatke, LaVern (Diane) Sabatke, Leslie (Pearl) Sabatke, and Larry (Lois) Sabatke; and many nieces and nephews.


He was preceded in death by his brother, Norman Berndt Sr.; brothers-in-law: Clifford Sabatke, Jack Sabatke and Ray Schlueter.


Services will be held Friday, April 9, 2010 at 11:00 AM at St. Stephen’s United Church of Christ. Pastor Missy Holdorf will officiate. Visitation will be Thursday, April 8, 2010 from 4-8 PM at Waid Funeral Home and again from 10 – 11 AM Friday at the church. Burial will follow at Snow Hill Cemetery, with military honors by VFW Post 1638. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorials be given to St. Stephen’s UCC.
